The new Department of Particle Physics and Astrophysics building at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot joins the faculty’s iconic structures along Marcus Ziv Boulevard, the institute’s central axis. The three-story building, with two additional underground levels, consolidates under one roof the offices of faculty members, administration, researchers and students, alongside advanced research laboratories.
The project also includes two visitor components: a conference center with a multipurpose auditorium, workspaces, and a library; and a visitor complex featuring a satellite launch control room and an interactive exhibition space. The complex program accommodates diverse and highly specific functions serving permanent, long-term, and short-term users. While separation between functions was essential, the design places even greater emphasis on fostering interaction and collaboration. To this end, a bright central atrium was designed as the heart of the building, surrounded by seating areas, balconies, kitchenettes, and a central staircase that encourages use of the communal space.
The architectural language of the building corresponds with the iconic Weizmann structures along Marcus Ziv Boulevard and connects via an internal bridge to the adjacent faculty building, strengthening the continuity of the department and improving circulation for its users
The building meets LEED Platinum certification, one of the highest sustainability standards in Israel. Its distinctive façade combines external shading devices and energy-efficient systems, with natural slate cladding inspired by the institute’s historic buildings, alongside custom-designed 3D architectural concrete tiles.
As an extension of the Faculty of Physics campus, the D.P.P.A. building embodies a synthesis of technological innovation, sustainable design, and preservation of the architectural identity of the Weizmann Institute of Science.
